What I Learned From Gary Vaynerchuk cover

Gary Vaynerchuk seemingly has endless ways to set himself apart from most entrepreneurs with lots of business lessons. The chairman of Vayner X and CEO of VaynerMedia is loud, bold, and brutally honest.

Gary Vaynerchuk is known for his brashness and ability to capture the attention of an audience.

When he graduated from college, Gary Vaynerchuk converted his family’s wine business from a $3 million into a $60 million enterprise in only 5 years.

He  has holdings in successful tech companies such as Tumblr, Uber, Facebook and Twitter . Moreover, he has founded an investment fund worth $25 million that is known as VaynerRSE.

Gary Vaynerchuk now leverages his social media following to inspire millions of people around the world to follow their passion and live a happy life.

ImportantHe  releases daily videos on his YouTube with over a million subscribers  and uses this platform to take followers behind the scenes to watch his daily activities and how he makes day to day decisions.

Gary Vaynerchuk is definitely an acute businessman who is full of wise counsel.

The chances are that if you’re reading this then you already know who Gary Vaynerchuk is and so we’re not going to spend too much time summarizing his career to date.

Let’s dive right in and take a look at what lessons we can learn from him and how we can apply it.

Gary Vaynerchuk has been one of my main role models the past few years. In this blog post, I have decided to share with you five lessons I have learnt from him.

Go All In

There is no shortcut to success. you have to work very hard to achieve success in anything.  If you want to make it in life, you have to go beyond your 9 to 5 job .

There is no substitute for hard work in the world of business.

ImportantThere is no secret to success or a 9-step success formula. If you want to be successful in any area,  prepare to work hard . If you decide to work hard, you might as well do something you are passionate about. It helps.

Hustle is one of the most important elements in the Gary Vaynerchuk philosophy.

When Gary Vaynerchuk talks about hustle, he’s talking about the need for people to put their all into something if they want to make it happen. From a marketing point of view,  hustle means continually trying new things  and working hard when everyone else is taking a day off.

When Oreo went viral with their “Dunk in the Dark” tweet, it was because a group of their key employees were hustling by watching the Superbowl from a special “war room” so that they could react to it as a brand in real time.

Gary Vaynerchuk doesn’t believe working traditional hours can lead to a successful career.

Executing from 9–5 like they teach you in school is not going to work if you want to be number 1. It’s going to lead you to a place where you’re not going to win.

Gary Vaynerchuk says hustle is the most underrated human characteristic there is.

He literally eats, sleep, craps and breathes  hustle every day with his unprecedented work ethic and passion for his craft .  He starts his day with the roosters and often works until wee hours of the night.

Every minute that you are not hustling, you are losing out.

WarningMany people spend countless hours debating the source of success. It is actually quite simple. All that you have to do is focus on your own hustle as much as you possibly can.

The number one mistake that people are making in life today is that they live life in the middle.

Most people do things mediocre. They do not go all in . Gary Vaynerchuk taught me to stop living in the middle. You either do something, or you do not.

Stick To Your DNA

Don’t try to emulate what your competition is doing.  Do what is right for you. Do more of it . Fail often but fail fast. If you were to fail you might as well do it quick, learn and move on.

You cannot become successful by emulating the actions of your competition. You may thrive but you will not bloom as a unique individual.

WarningLearning from those who have already achieved success is great. However,  strive to chart your own path of success . Pick what is right for you and then do it as often as you can.

When all is said and done, the one person who cares about you more than everyone else is you.

It is very important to  ensure that you are happy about the decisions which you make about your life . Yes, you will make many mistakes. However, even if you make them, it will be on your personal terms and not anyone else’s.

This means that you will be able to live life not trying to impress anyone else. Gary Vaynerchuk follows his heart.

A large part of Gary Vaynerchuk’s incredible drive is because he really loves the hustle.  He admits his happiness comes from a hard-driving, virtually non-stop lifestyle , and an overpowering work ethic.

Everyone who is successful in any shape or form will tell you to work towards your strengths and around your weaknesses.

ImportantSelf-awareness means recognising your own strengths and weaknesses, understanding your own emotions, how certain situations impact your feelings and what you think and do as a result.

Observation and self-awareness are crucial to self-confidence and certainty.

Knowing what you can and can’t do is key  so that you could focus your energy on activities that come natural to you and outsource/delegate activities that are not your forte.

Patience Wins

Gary Vaynerchuk believes in the power of being patient and that  patience is the mother of success . He has built a model around delayed gratification: Macro Patience. Micro Speed.

The Macro Patience is all about your vision and end-goals.

It is knowing where you are heading and being patient in the process. It does not mean to sit around and do nothing. It means that  you put in the work every day but do not expect any significant returns in the short-term .

Micro Speed is daily execution without any short-term expectations.

In the day to day work, you have to be fast. You see a task that needs to be finished? Go do it. There is a problem? Fix it. That is where the Micro Speed is all about.

Gary Vaynerchuk links a lack of patience with insecurity, where people desire instant recognition.

WarningThey want to prove themselves so bad that they become impatient.  Being patient can serve as a tool to focus on the joy of working on what matters for us , rather than the pressure of getting quickly from A to B.

Most people want their long-term goals fast, while they are lazy in the short-term and do not execute.

ImportantBut there is no shortcut to success, which stresses the importance of patience and the fact that you should believe in your abilities.

Consistency is the biggest building block when it comes to success. Be consistent and let your actions map to your ambitions.

In 2006, Gary Vaynerchuk promoted his father’s wine store online by creating Wine Library TV. He created videos in which he tasted and reviewed 4 different wines, and promoted them on YouTube.  He made 25-minute episodes 5 times a week and did this for 10 years!

Success comes from patience and persistence. There are no formulas. Nothing worth building was done overnight.

Don't chase money

Legacy is greater than currency.  All your decisions have to align with your long-term legacy . It cannot be about the dollars you want to keep in your own pocket.

If you are a hustler and a hard worker, put everything in your personal brand and your legacy.

Gary Vaynerchuk has always been focused on his long-term goals and legacy  to become the biggest wine retailer in the world. He payed himself almost nothing even though the company was growing like crazy. He let employees go on vacation and sacrificed his vacation time.

Whenever possible, you should always give more without expecting anything in return. Give 51 Take 49.

Gary Vaynerchuk gives out so much free advice and doesn’t ask for anything in return. However, when he releases a book, people are more likely to buy it as they gained value from his free content, and buying the book would be a way to thank him.

Every company needs to be a media company. Becoming an authority/thought leader within any given field should be on your agenda.

ImportantUnderstand what’s important to your audience.  Produce free content around your valuable expertise . You have only two options. One, let their potential customer consume content from them, or two, allow their customer access the information from someone else.

Give insane value away for free then right hook them when they’ve softened up.

The title of Gary Vaynerchuk’s most popular book is “Jab Jab Jab Right Hook.” It essentially focuses on  the concept of softening up your audience by educating them and delivering value  before you go in for the “Right Hook,” and try to sell them.

Focus on the long-term value. It starts with care first.

Instead of a short sales cycle,  Gary Vaynerchuk focuses on a long-term relationship building . He’s known to leave huge sums of money on a table for the sake of genuine care and help without asking anything in return because relationships are so much more important to him than money.

Being empathetic towards others means you are humble and this is a wise lesson for everyone.

Stop Complaining

Stop complaining is a life lesson that kind of matches with gratefulness. According to Gary Vaynerchuk,  complaining is the biggest waste of energy . Besides that, he is convinced that people that are complain just lack perspective.

When you get knocked down, get up.

Not all of Gary Vaynerchuk’s business deals have been a success and he makes no secret of that fact. He often says that  he secretly hopes that he loses his empire just so he can build it all back up again .

Sometimes things go so drastically wrong that all you can do is pull a campaign entirely and start again, just as McDonald’s had to do after their epic #McFail. When you’re McDonald’s, you can’t just give up.

If you embrace your underdog status you can experience the climb to the fullest.

We all know the feeling of being underestimated. This can make you feel less valuable. This is for a lot of people demotivating, however, they should make it as one of their biggest motivations.

The start of a process is something beautiful, so fall in love with it. Love the climb.

ImportantYou  should be confident enough to tell other people about what you do . This is an effective form of word of mouth marketing and can land you clients or even investors. You can borrow from this lesson and shine according to your own capability.

The first rule of success is to have self-confidence. If you don’t believe in yourself, who will?

WarningInstead of complaining, you need to find ways to reinvent your business in order to stay relevant to market demands.  In an increasingly fast-paced environment, it is especially easy to get left behind .

Putting yourself “out of business” is better than allowing someone else to do it.
