A millionaire heiress, former model, businesswoman, and aspiring first daughter, she wakes up most mornings in the penthouse of a building named for her family and slips on a dress with her name on the tag. At only 39 years old, Ivanka Trump has covered enormous ground as a businesswoman which has helped her step out of her father’s long shadow and that is why women entrepreneurs who want to excel in business can learn important lessons from Ivanka Trump’s success.
Her most famous advice implies that all of us have the potential for happier, healthier, better organized, and more fulfilling lives at work and at home.

Her approach is to celebrate the fact that we’re really all the architects of our own lives. And we have one life, and you have to make it what you want it to be. For her own life, she tries her best to balance her time between business and taking care of her two children–but, as she says, the “scale always tips in one direction.” At the end of they day, you’re either choosing to be in the workforce or you’re choosing to stay at home. Your call, your responsibility.

If you’re curious about Ivanka Trump, who’s taken an unpaid job as a senior adviser to her father, and how she might influence the Trump administration’s attitudes about women, you might want to lean in. It’s your time, time to step up and get noticed at work–focus and efficiency will open doors.
Tip #1: Time Is Not Refundable
Ivanka Trump gets it right when she writes that many of us get so caught up in the daily demands of work — answering emails, going to meetings, etc. — that we fail to prioritize what matters most to us. That’s why she makes a point of identifying her priorities and putting them first.
Remember: your life’s happiness begins with you.
Once a week, Ivanka checks in with herself to consider her larger goals and plan for the week ahead. She also makes a list at the beginning of each year of high-level objectives for each of her businesses, things she wants to accomplish personally and ways to connect with each of her children and husband. In her boos, Ivanka Trump writes about the way she color-codes her digital calendar by business and topic–construction, acquisition, design. That way, when she clicks on it, she gets a “visual snapshot” of where she is spending most of her time.
Successful people manage their time proactively, not reactively.
Instead of wandering through the day and reacting to things as they come up, they plan their days around their goals. Aside from her digital calendar, Ivanka Trump keeps a Moleskine notebook in which she organizes her long- and short-term goals. She uses Stephen Covey’s four-quadrant time management grid to organize each week (each quadrant represents a certain level of urgency and importance), and Ryder Carroll’s Bullet Journal for the day-to-day.
A routine must be worked out that details your everyday work schedule.
The routine will help you decide what has to be done at every instant, and why. An office schedule and a home schedule must be developed, and you should follow your routine religiously to ensure you meet your goals. According to Business Insider, the First Daughter wakes up at 5:30 in the morning. This is reportedly the same hour as her father’s wake-up schedule. Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, also reportedly targets to finish their “self-preparations,” including workouts and make-up sessions, before waking up the kids at 7:00 in the morning. She said that she wanted to focus these hours solely on her kids once they get up.
Being disciplined is one of the key characteristics of successful people.
Always lead a disciplined life in order to carry forward your work as well as your family life. Without it, chances are you will not get anywhere. Part of being a girl boss is knowing when to dedicate time towards your passions and when to spend time with loved ones. The time you take for yourself to rejuvenate is so important for your mental health. And, learning to prioritize the main aspects of your life is critical for your success. A girl boss knows this, and is a master at balancing the two so she gets an equal amount of dedication to both.
Tip #2: Hard Work Beats Talent
What’s amazing about Ivanka Trump is that despite her affluent background, she never felt entitled to any of the collective success that her family enjoys. She fully understands that the world is not going to go out if its way to hand success on a silver platter — it needs to be earned.
Hard work and dedication are keys to be successful in life.
The secret to success in life is Hard work, Dedication, Patience and Resilience. Sometimes what you plan will not always work as planned, but you must not allow such to weigh you down. When Ivanka was a boardroom judge on the business reality show “The Apprentice” with her father Donald Trump, she said the following about the contestants: “Whenever I see their breakdowns, I understand. They go virtually 24 hours a day, and each task takes about three days. Unless they win, they don’t get a day off… It’s an incredible amount of work…”.
You will have many sleepless nights working on your business; you will have little time to waste on social media or with friends.
It will take you many years while being a hard-worker for you to attend success. It is something you have to make it a commitment and dedicate your time and resources for it. If becoming successful in life was as easy as people assume it to be, then many would have attend success and become rich in life even before you were born. This is normally hidden from the public because we only hear of the heroes when they have finally perfected their skills. Do not be deceived by what you see people show you. You must be confident of what you intend doing, you must identify it, you must put down the strategies it takes to achieve your desired success, you must start doing what it takes to get success in life, you must do it continually and never be discouraged.
Hard work and dedication leads to a successful life, and dedication and commitment to a desired outcome, a goal you just can’t shake, is what life is all about.
A lot of people out there wait until they feel good to get something done. However, the reality of being human is that most of the time, you’re going to feel lazy. Biologically we are wired to be lazy, and for our ancestors, it was a survival mechanism. The key was to conserve as much energy between meals as possible so that you can save it for the hunt. No matter what day it is, no matter how you feel on that day, show up to work and give it 100%.
If you work hard and remain dedicated, you can counter any obstacle that lies in the path towards success.
The primary factor behind a successful person is his/her level of dedication, which signifies the commitment of a person towards achieving objectives and life goals. Thus, dedication implies total devotion. Ask any successful personality the reason behind their success and the first answer that will emanate is they were dedicated. Dedication is thus the ultimate key to success in life. A dedicated person is eternally optimistic and makes the maximum possible use of the present circumstances. Nothing in the world can hinder or impede the firm resolve of a dedicated individual.
Tip #3: Don't Settle for Mediocrity
Many successful people recommend finding a mentor. So it’s not surprising that Ivanka Trump recommends finding someone who can offer you advice and help you make connections. She also recommends finding a career sponsor — a senior-level person at work who will advocate for you. Participate in work-related activities, such as the company running club or charitable events, to develop relationships with those who are higher up. Once you get to know them, offer to help them with projects at work.
According to Ivanka, the thought of existing at the Trump Organization in a minor capacity was scary.
Given Ivanka’s unique circumstances, she’d be damned if she lived the typical cliché of being the rich daughter who did nothing. Like her, one should always strive to add value to whatever field they’re in. The worst thing you could do is to just skate on by and simply get a passing mark in the world of business. Not always being wildly successful is NOT the same thing as constantly striving to be wildly successful.
When Ivanka couldn’t get into a particular professor’s class at college, she just turned up. As an undergraduate, she talked her way into a prestigious graduate subject with MBA students. As a young, female board director in a room full of middle-aged men, she held her own and never let on that she was nervous. Basically, the best advice she can give an aspiring young businesswoman is to behave with her sense of entitlement. She has had flashes of ingenuity that any timid woman in the workplace could do well to emulate, though they may not come by the confidence to do so in quite the same way.
Most average people give up as soon as things get tough and then they complain that they never got what they wanted.
Of course things will get hard! You will cry, be frustrated, afraid, angry, and totally beaten to a pulp, but when the average person stops getting up, you have to rise once more. What do you want? What do you truly desire? Whatever it is, however impossible it seems, never surrender, never give up on it, and never settle for anything less than that. Get it, or die trying. That is the attitude of winners.
People should never settle for a life of mediocrity, yet they do.
They stay in jobs we hate, relationships that are broken, leading lives where they have so little happiness. Maybe because you believe it’s easier to settle than face the battles ahead to make your life better than it is, you settle for a life of mediocrity. Well you shouldn’t, you already know its strangling you like a slow death. The things that you’re frightened to do are the things that you need to do because they carry your greatest growth. Just remember, fear is your opportunity to grow. Fear is your opportunity to become more. Be daring, bold, brave and do the things that frighten you.
Tip #4: Love What You Do
Granted, not everyone has the financial luxury of pursuing their passion if it doesn’t pay the bills. But if you’re in a position where you don’t have to settle for any job, you shouldn’t make a career move that doesn’t align with your personal and professional passions. You can do this by thinking about what you loved doing as a child. Ask yourself what things you do that feel as natural as breathing and make the hours disappear like minutes. And, don’t be afraid to ask others to help you identify your strengths.
What you have to offer no other person in the world has. These are our unique gifts and talents, the things we are born with. And if we choose to focus and work on them and with them, we will encounter success.
When it comes to creating the life you want to live, consciously or not, you choose the kind of work you do, the character of the people who surround you, the type of organization to which you will or won’t devote yourself, the sort of responses you have, positive or negative, effective or ineffective, to the challenges (big and small) life throws at you.
Work with love. Work with the things you are passionate about. And in doing so you will discover things about yourself you never dreamed were possible.
When you’re doing what you love and love what you do, you are happy. When you’re happy, you are more relaxed, you enjoy life, you are creative. When you are creative you are true to yourself, you express yourself, you give to others through your work, your art. At the end of the day or life, not money or material things give you that sense of accomplishment, that internal joy, but knowing that you were of help, you made things better than you found them.
Doing what you love is a lifestyle that brings genuine happiness into your life seven days out of your week.
Doing what you love will make you consistently happier than you ever could feel at a job that you drag yourself to for money or advancement. Deciding to do what you love as your chosen craft is going to fill you up with a sort of excitement, passion, and joy that the majority of people in our society don’t have access to. That alone is reason enough to go after your passion. Conversely, dragging yourself to a job that you don’t feel a strong gravitation toward or passion for puts a damper on your happiness, contentment, and enthusiasm for life. And it also puts a drain on your motivation, work ethic, effort, drive, and performance.
Passion is something that you know you love to do every day for the rest of your life.
If you want to do something and you do not care much about the money then that is passion. So, do the things that you love to do. Let yourself be free and allow yourself to be passionate about things that matter to you. If you do what you love for a living, it means that you do not just do it out of passion. You do not just live by it because that is where your greatest strengths lie. To be both successful and to do what you really want would take time. You will experience failures and other challenges. But if you know yourself and you are willing to do to excel and to be really good at what you love, success will eventually come.
Tip #5: Never Stop Negotiating
Women can’t be reminded enough to negotiate. That’s because most women don’t. Ivanka Trump points to research by Carnegie Mellon University professor Linda Babcock that shows that only 7 percent of women negotiate their starting salaries. In addition, according to her, women ask for raises and promotions 85 percent less often than men.
Women should actively advocate for themselves and negotiate at critical junctures in their careers.
On their way in, by putting themselves in the running for new jobs and negotiating their compensation packages; on their way up, by targeting and seeking development opportunities, visible assignments and promotions; and even on their way out, by negotiating the terms of their exit from a company. To negotiate a better salary, Ivanka recommends documenting everything you’ve done because your supervisor likely doesn’t know the full extent of your contributions.
Negotiating for yourself does not mean that you should focus on yourself–in fact, by focusing on the other side’s needs and the company’s priorities, you are far more likely to achieve the outcomes you desire.
Always frame your offering in terms of what the employer needs. Take, for example, a female executive who was offered the role of CEO at a company based in another state. The one-year contract the board offered her was not acceptable given the impact a move would have on her spouse and her school-aged children. So she framed her request around the company’s needs: she presented a five-year turnaround plan, laying out what it would take to hit yearly targets and requested a five-year contract to go with it. The board agreed. The executive advanced the company’s agenda, and she got what she needed.
Identify EVERYTHING that can be negotiated. Most people wrongly assume that only financials can be negotiated.
The first mistake I see people make is not recognizing that the opportunity to negotiate exists and then, when they do negotiate, not identifying everything that can be negotiated. What about vacation time, work-from-home privileges, additional training, and changing projects? Offer multiple options. Multiple options create room during the negotiation for the other side to decide what’s best for them. For example, you might ask for a higher base salary or specific bonuses and incentives. This allows the other side to determine what risk they want to assume.
Last but not least, talk, think and dress for what you want — not what you have.
You don’t need to spend an enormous amount on designer clothes. It is possible to look the part — whatever that might be for your profession and come across very polished on a reasonable budget. Dress for the job you want. Make sure your outfit is as smart and polished as you will be in the role you’re interviewing for. When you leave you want them to remember what you said, not what you wore. Although if they remember you being incredibly chic that is definitely okay!

She tried always to meet her father’s high expectations and she has always made the most of what has been given to her. She is confident and self-assured — and that is the most effective way in which other working women can learn from her.
According to her mother, Ivanka was bound to be disciplined, polished, and tactful–she made sure of it.
